The 5th Wave Review

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave #1) by Rick Yancey

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker.

Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

My review

This book is as mind blowing as it is heart wrenching. It messes up with your head until you don't know what is and what is not. I've been reading it since yesterday and couldn't put it down until few minutes ago when I turned the last page. And what the heck?! I thought I still have few pages to read and when I turn the page Acknowledgements comes up.
I don't know what to say without spoiling anything. Let's see... I guess The 5th Wave is your typical Aliens came to our Earth to destroy everything we hold dear and yada yada yada. But every now and then when you are discovering the truth along with the characters, that's where it gets interesting. The plot twists are so refined and casually slipped in between the lines you have to stop and read the whole damn page again if you don't want to miss something. And the clues are out in the open, but you still miss them. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about right? Well, you gotta read the book and you'll see for yourself.
There's a different story told by different characters. Each of them tells their version of the story, how they got to the point they did and what they did. The main two characters are Cassie and Ben and their promise to little Sammy. I like it how the story built up to this peak when their stories intertwined. It was nicely written.
But still, the whole story is about uniting together and defeating the evil forces but at the same time it tells you what is happening in the background, in people's heads when they do unimaginable things when they are forced to decide.
